Appadene Forest Products win Furniture Award

Appadene Forest Products of Manjimup have won the Dining Table and Chairs category of the 2007 WA Furniture Industry Awards held in Perth this month.

The winning dining table and chairs were from Appadene's "Forest " Range of furniture which features the natural edge of Jarrah and Marri and is manufactured in Appadene Road, West Manjimup.

Owner of Appadene Forest Products, Colin Campbell said it was an honour to accept the award amongst a high standard of competitors and was rewarding recognition for the team at Appadene.

" Appadene Forest Products is fortunate to work with the superb native hardwoods of south western Australia on location in the forest at Manjimup employing local people.

"I began working with timber in 1977 as a tree faller and was paid by the rate at which I could cut down huge trees which seemed to be in abundance then.

"Now, our challenge is to gain maximum value from the mature trees that are a scarce resource.

"At Appadene we process logs through our sawmill to produce fine furniture and high quality flooring in a fully integrated value adding operation.

"We believe this seamless operation develops a culture to maximise value and minimise waste from sustainable harvest of scarce timber resources.

"Our team at Appadene looks forward to competing again next year in the Furniture Industry Awards as part of our continuous improvement,"Mr Campbell said.

Appadene wins national award

Appadene Forest Products produces the finest timber floors in WA, according to results of the recent Australian Floor of the Year Awards, held in Sydney.

The best installed residential timber floor from WA was from Marri milled and processed at Appadene's centre in Appadene Road, West Manjimup, and laid by Appadene in a new home near Manjimup.

Owner of Appadene Forest Products Colin Campbell said it was an honour to be recognised as the best residential timber floorer from WA, as runner-up to the winner from Victoria in an Australia wide field of competitors.

The award for timber flooring follows Appadene Forest Products recently also winning the dining Table and Chairs category of the 2007 WA Furniture Industry Awards held in Perth.

Mr Campbell said his team at Appadene based their business on displaying the finest qualities of what he regards as the finest hardwoods in Australia from the forests of the State's South West.

"There is strong demand for high quality timber floors in marri, jarrah and blackbutt in both new and other homes and commercial buildings in WA" he said.

"Our challenge is to gain maximum value from the mature trees that are a scarce resource. "

"We mill the timber at Appadene with care to ensure we can gain the highest possible recovery for both fine furniture and flooring timber, which we then process on site to the finished product."

"We also use state of the art computer monitored timber drying kilns to ensure high quaality, stable and durable flooring timber."

"At Appadene, we consider competing in both State and National competitions for flooring and furniture as an important benchmarking process for our continuous improvement."

"On a day to day basis we have our heads down doing our job, and it is rewarding when others judge that we are doing our job well"

Appadene wins special accolade

Manjimup's Appadene Forest Products won the outstanding contribution to industry award at the recent Forst Industries Federation of WA annual awards presentation in Perth.

The award is for contribution in an exceptional way to the forest industry over a period of time.

Owner of Appadene Forest Products Colin Campbell said it was a surprise and an honour to accept the award, with competitors of such a high standard, and was welcome recognition for the team at Appadene.

Mr Campbell said Appadene had nominated for the excellence in processing, production or management of a small enterprise category, and had won that award, but then was surprised and thrilled to also win the outstanding contibution to industry award.

Mr Campbell was a faller for about 20 years before starting his own timbrt-processing business in the mid-90s, and said this had helped him understand the qualities of timber necessary to enable processing to high-quality furniture and flooring.

He said his experience in South West forests had also led to an appreciation of the limited availability of high-quality logs and thus the importance of sustainable management of the resource being linked to the processing of logs for high-value products.

"When we established Appadene Forest products in Appadene Road, Manjimup in 1995, our vision was to run fully integrated processing of logs through to high-quality furniture and flooring, located in the region in which the timber was harvested, employing local people," Mr Campbell said.

"Appadene Forest Products now processes 750 tonnes of first and second grade jarrah sawlogs and 400 tonnes of Marri sawlogs to fine furniture, flooring and other products."

This relatively low volume of logs is the basis for both a profitable business and employment of 10 people.

"We have achieved our vision, and the quality of Appadene Fine Furniture and Flooring has been recognised in both State and national competions," Mr Campbell said.
